The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy

Ever wonder where your t-shirt came from? If anyone was hurt in the making of it? If it contributed to the injustice in the world? These are pertinent questions as we think through what it means to be committed to justice in a broken world.

Pietra Rivoli, author of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy, tried to answer those questions. The book chronicles the journey of a single t-shirt from a cotton field in Texas, to a factory in Shanghai, to a Salvation Army bin, to Tanzania, Africa and points out all the winners and the losers along the way.

For a great introduction to Rivoli’s work check out NPR’s Planet Money podcast. Planet Money, a podcast dedicated to explaining the complicated world of economics, “stole” Rivoli’s idea and bought a shirt of their own and have following in Rivoli’s footsteps. See their blog for links to their radio programs about the t-shirt.
